Cowbridge, or Y Bont-Faen in Welsh, is a historic market town in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan. Its history dates back to Roman times when it was a settlement designed to service the nearby Roman fort of Bovium. The town's name derives from the Old Welsh' Y Bont Fawr' meaning 'the great bridge', referring to the bridge that initially spanned the River Thaw at this point. Medieval Cowbridge grew around the castle built by the Normans in the early 12th century, and the Town Walls, some of which still stand today, were erected in the 13th century.
